Mexico: Civic activists to march in downtown Mexico City Oct. 11

Civic activists plan march in central Mexico City, Mexico, Oct. 11. Heightened security and disruptions likely.

Informational

Members of the National Assembly of Electricity Users (ANUEE) have gathered for a march in downtown Mexico City on Oct. 11. The purpose of the action is to demand fair rates for electricity and renationalization of the energy industry, among other requests. Protesters gathered near the Federal Commission of Electricity (Comision Federal de Electricidad, CFE) building on the intersection between Avenida Paseo de la Reforma and Avenida Insurgentes Sur. They were supposed to march from 07:30 toward the Ministry of the Interior and the Zocalo.

The demonstration will likely cause transport disruptions along the route. Although the action should remain largely peaceful, authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence nearby as a precaution. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized business disruptions are likely.

Avoid the march as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the march route. Seek alternate routes to circumvent any related transport disruptions. Do not attempt to cross any roadblocks set up by protesters; wait for the police to dismantle them before proceeding. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
