Mexico: Indigenous rights activists to stage protest blockades across Michoacan State Oct. 12
Indigenous rights activists to stage protest blockades across Michoacan State, Mexico, Oct. 12; road and rail transport disruptions likely.
Activists affiliated with the Supreme Indigenous Council of Michoacan (Consejo Supremo Indigena de Michoacan, CSIM) have announced plans to stage protest blockades in various locations across Michoacan State on Oct. 12. The purpose of the demonstrations is to denounce perceived insecurity and insufficient access to clean drinking water in indigenous communities. Demonstration organizers have asserted that activists would peacefully protest on various highways and train tracks but did not immediately release information regarding the specific protest locations. Hundreds of people may participate in the protests.
Heightened security, disruptions to road and/or rail transport, and business disruptions will likely affect areas subject to protest activity. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out, especially if authorities attempt to forcibly disperse the gatherings.
Avoid all protest activity as a precaution. Seek alternative routes and allow additional time for travel if operating in Michoacan. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately depart the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
