Mexico: Unionized education workers to protest, block roads across Michoacan State Oct. 21
Unionized teachers to protest and block roads across Michoacan State, Mexico, Oct. 21; transport disruptions likely.
Unionized teachers affiliated with the National Coordinating Committee of Education Workers (Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educacion, CNTE) plan to protest and block roads in various locations across Michoacan State on Oct. 21. The purpose of the action, which is part of a larger protest campaign launched on Oct. 18, is to demand improved working conditions and recognition of contract workers. Organizers have as yet only released details for one specific demonstration on at the Patzcuaro-Morelia highway near the CONALEP school in Patzcuaro; related protests at other locations statewide could occur with little to no advance warning.
Heightened security, as well as localized transport and business disruptions, are likely near any protests that may materialize. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out, especially if authorities attempt to forcibly disperse the gatherings.
Avoid all protest activity as a precaution. Seek alternative routes and allow additional time for travel if operating in Michoacan. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately depart the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
