Nigeria: Unionized medical workers plan to strike nationwide Oct. 26-Nov. 2

Unionized medical workers plan to strike across Nigeria Oct. 26-Nov. 2. Disruptions to medical services likely.

Informational

Unionized medical workers from the Joint Health Sectors Union (JOHESU) and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (AHPA) plan to strike across Nigeria Oct. 26-Nov. 2. The action is to call for higher salaries and better working conditions. While organizers have not announced any protests, demonstrations are possible outside the Ministry of Health headquarters in Abuja. Gatherings could also occur outside hospitals, medical facilities, and government buildings, including in Abuja and Lagos.

Unless averted, the action will likely cause medical service disruptions. Public healthcare institutions could limit their services to treating only emergency cases. Spillover disruptions are also possible at private clinics and hospitals due to increased demand as patients seek other treatment options. Increased security and localized transport disruptions are probable near any protests that materialize. Clashes between police and protesters are possible, particularly if the latter are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.

Reconfirm all medical appointments Oct. 26- Nov. 2. Avoid protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near any protest sites. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Heed instructions from authorities.
