Suspected armed militants kidnapped a US national in Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte Province, at around 23:00 Oct. 17. According to preliminary reports, heavily armed gunmen posing as police officers abducted the victim from his residence following an altercation in which the abductee received a gunshot wound to the leg. The perpetrators left the scene with the victim in a watercraft. While investigators are still attempting to determine the motive behind the incident, authorities suspect Islamic State affiliate Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) may be involved.
Authorities will likely maintain an elevated security posture in and around Sibuco as they search for the kidnappers and attempt to free the victim. Security measures could include roadblocks, checkpoints, and searches of vehicles, prompting localized transport disruptions.
