Romania: Workers to demonstrate in Timisoara Oct. 9
Unionized workers to hold protest march near Victory Square in Timisoara, Romania, 12:00-14:00 Oct. 9. Heightened security likely.
Unionized IT workers plan to hold a protest march in central Timisoara from 12:00-14:00 on Oct. 9. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce alleged work-related mistreatment following the deaths of two IT workers in the city. Participants will gather at Victory Square (also known as Opera Square) at 12:00 and march through the surrounding area. It was not immediately clear what route organizers intended to take or how many people would participate in the march.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest area. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central Timisoara in the early afternoon. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
