South Africa: Activists to stage protest march in Pretoria Oct. 25

Ga-Rankuwa Zone 2 residents to stage protest march in Pretoria, South Africa, Oct. 25; increased security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Residents of Ga-Rankuwa's Zone 2 are planning to stage a protest march in Pretoria on Oct. 25. The purpose of the demonstration is to demand improvements to local road infrastructure, among other improvements to the provision of public services. Protest participants are slated to gather near the intersection of Kgosi Mampuru and Madiba streets from 09:00 and then march toward Tshwane House via Madiba Street. Police have announced that the protest march will affect the following roads in the Pretoria Central area:

  • Madiba Street

  • Kgosi Mampuru Street

  • Sophie de Bruyn Street

  • Bosman Street

  • Paul Kruger Street

  • Thabo Sehume Street

  • Lilian Ngoyi Street

The number of people who would participate in the protest march was not immediately clear. Officials have indicated that the demonstrators will probably disperse from the vicinity of Tshwane House by 12:00.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions will likely affect the vicinity of the march. Violence is unlikely amid the demonstration, but police may attempt to disperse the protesters if they perceive that the demonstrators are overly disruptive. Associated scuffles cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protest march as a precaution. Check for transport disruptions before beginning journeys and allow extra time for travel in Pretoria Central. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
