Sri Lanka: Authorities maintaining tight security in coastal areas as of Oct. 25, due to terror threat affecting Arugam Bay /update 1

Tight security continues in coastal areas of Sri Lanka, as of Oct. 25 due to terror warning for Arugam Bay. Localized disruptions possible.

Warning

Sri Lankan authorities are maintaining tight security in areas frequented by tourists as of Oct. 25. The move follows a US embassy warning Oct. 23 regarding a purported terror threat to tourist spots in the Arugam Bay area, Ampara District, Eastern Province. Multiple other governments have also cited the threat, advising its citizens to exercise caution. The Israeli government is warning its citizens to leave Arugam Bay and coastal areas, including Ahangama, Galle, Hikkaduwa, and Weligama, and avoid nonessential travel to other parts of Sri Lanka. Other nations may also issue related advisories in the coming days.

Police have arrested three suspects as part of investigations into threats targeting Israeli tourists. Officials have intensified security measures in coastal areas, especially in the Eastern and Southern provinces. Tight security is certain at government and military installations, major transport hubs, religious sites, tourist areas, and other possible target locations such as eateries and places of worship frequented by Israeli and Jewish clients. Measures such as vehicle and hotel checks are especially likely near beaches and maritime facilities. Such measures may prompt localized transport and commercial disruptions near sensitive sites. An intensive response to alleged or actual security incidents is probable as a precaution.

Arugam Bay is approximately 48 km (29.8 miles) southeast of Ampara City.

Limit exposure to crowded markets and other locations that could be considered militant targets, especially during peak business hours. Avoid display of national and religious affiliation. Carry identification documents for presentation at security checks. Allow additional time for security screening at transport hubs, religious venues, and tourist sites. Heed all advice of security personnel. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation and monitor for alerts and/or instructions.

The terror threat in Sri Lanka remains moderate. Radicalization by Islamist militant outfits, especially the Islamic State (IS) and its affiliates, remains a serious concern. Arugam Bay and the nearby Pottuvil, as well as multiple coastal areas, are popular holiday destinations with a notable presence of Israeli tourists, heightening the risk of attacks linked to developments in the Middle East.
