Sri Lanka: Authorities tighten security in Arugam Bay, Ampara District, Eastern Province, Oct. 23, due to terror threat

Officials boost security in Arugam Bay, Eastern Province, as of Oct. 23 due to terror warning. Localized disruptions possible.

Warning

Authorities are bolstering security in the Arugam Bay area, Ampara District, Eastern Province, as of Oct. 23, amid a US embassy warning regarding a purported terror threat to tourist spots in the region. The UK government has also cited the threat, advising its citizens to exercise caution. Other nations may also issue related advisories in the coming days.

Tight security is certain at government and military installations, major transport hubs, religious sites, tourist areas, and other possible target locations such as eateries and places of worship frequented by Israeli and Jewish clients. Measures such as vehicle and hotel checks are especially likely near beaches and maritime facilities. Such measures may prompt localized transport and commercial disruptions near sensitive sites. An intensive response to alleged or actual security incidents is probable as a precaution.

Arugam Bay is approximately 48 km (29.8 miles) southeast of Ampara.

Limit exposure to crowded markets and other locations that could be considered militant targets, especially during peak business hours. Avoid display of national and religious affiliation. Carry identification documents for presentation at security checks. Allow additional time for security screening at transport hubs, religious venues, and tourist sites. Heed all advice of security personnel.

The terror threat in Sri Lanka remains moderate. Radicalization by Islamist militant outfits, especially the Islamic State (IS) and its affiliates, remains a serious concern. Arugam Bay and the nearby Pottuvil are popular holiday destinations with a notable presence of Israeli tourists, heightening the risk of attacks linked to developments in the Middle East.
