Turkiye: Authorities increase security, impose public gathering bans in Diyarbakir Province through Oct. 13
Authorities increase security in Diyarbakir Province, Turkiye, through 23:59 Oct. 13 ahead of banned protest. Heightened security likely.
Increased security is likely in Diyarbakir Province through at least late Oct. 13 amid concerns related to a banned opposition protest. Activists affiliated with the People's Democratic Party (DEM Party) had planned to protest at Station Square (Istasyon Meydani) in the city of Diyarbakir 13:00-18:00 Oct. 13; however, on Oct. 8 authorities announced that they had banned the event. Additionally, authorities are implementing heightened security measures, including a ban on all public gatherings, as well as unspecified measures to prevent persons from entering or transiting the province for the purpose of attending such demonstrations.
Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased numbers of civilian police and military personnel across Diyarbakir through at least late Oct. 13. Security measures could include checkpoints along major thoroughfares in the region, as well as increased vehicular and pedestrian searches. Transport disruptions are likely, particularly on major roadways entering the province. Pro-Kurdish activist groups could stage protests in response to measures, and some activists may still attempt to gather at the announce demonstration venue on the afternoon of Oct. 13; police will very likely respond swiftly and forcefully to any such gatherings that may materialize. Rail disruptions are possible at Diyarbakir Station should any such gatherings occur.
Exercise increased caution if operating in Diyarbakir through early Oct. 14. Strictly heed the instructions of security personnel. Carry proper identification documents on your person at all times. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement officers. Avoid any demonstrations that may occur; keep away from any location where police or military personnel appear to be deploying. Allow additional time if traveling via Diyarbakir Station in the afternoon or evening Oct. 13.
