Turkiye: Demonstrations protesting violence against women possible in cities nationwide through at least Oct. 20

Women's rights activists likely to protest in cities across Turkiye through at least Oct. 20. Localized heightened security likely.

Informational

A recent series of protests by women's rights groups could continue in cities across Turkiye through at least Oct. 20. Demonstrations denouncing several incidents of femicide have occurred in numerous major cities in mid-October, including Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, frequently drawing hundreds of participants. During a related protest in Van on Oct. 16, a large crowd pushed through police barricades to march through the city despite municipal officials having banned the event.

Organizers have been announcing events with little advance notice, likely in an effort to hamper police ability to respond; one such demonstration will take place in Izmir on Oct. 18. Participants will assemble at the Gazi Ayse Hanim Girls' School in the city's Buca neighborhood at 18:30 before marching to an undisclosed location. Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near all protest sites. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or opposed individuals cannot be ruled out, and are particularly like in the event of arrests.

Avoid all protest areas as a standard precaution. Keep away from locations where demonstrators or police appear to be assembling. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
