UK: Climate activists plan daily demonstrations in London Oct. 28-30

Climate activists plan daily demonstrations in London, UK, Oct. 28-30. Heightened security, traffic disruptions likely.

Informational

Climate activists led by Extinction Rebellion (XR) plan to protest daily in London Oct. 28-30. Campaigners will target insurance companies associated with the fossil fuel sector. Protesters will gather daily at Trinity Square Gardens from 11:00 and will then likely stage pickets and potential roadblock protests at insurance companies' headquarters in the City district. XR are unlikely to publish details of each day's events to maximize their short-term impact. Several dozen to low hundreds will likely take part, however XR's tactics will likely prompt disproportionate disruptions. Futher demonstrations are possible in major centers nationwide.

XR has a policy of peaceful protest, however the demonstrations may attract more militant activists. These activists may engage in more disruptive activity, such as spraying paint over buildings (a tactic used by Just Stop Oil), attempting physical breaches of buildings, other acts of vandalism, or intimidating behavior.

Police will likely deploy to all actions and attempt to prevent or disperse unruly demonstrations. Associated road closures will likely prompt localized travel disruptions. Violence is unlikely as XR advocates non-violent civil disobedience.

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Check trusted local media sources for up-to-date information on demonstrations during the affected period. Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions for disruptions before beginning journeys; allow extra time to reach destinations in central London during the protest campaign. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
