Major fire ongoing at oil deoit in Feodosia, Crimea, Ukraine, Oct. 8. Increased security, evacuations, disruptions likely.
Firefighters are deployed to an oil depot near Feodosia, on Oct. 8, where a major blaze continues for a second day following a Ukrainian drone strike early on Oct. 7. Emergency services and firefighters remain deployed to control and extinguish the fire. As of Oct. 8, reports claim that the fire has engulfed an area of 2,500 square meters (26,900 square feet). Authorities evacuated up to 1,047 people from the nearby areas. No casualties are reported.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security presence in the affected area until firefighters extinguish the blaze and give the all-clear. Localized transport and business disruptions will likely affect the vicinity of the fire over the coming hours. Officials may close local roads or issue evacuation orders on short notice to facilitate the emergency response and ensure public safety. The fire has reportedly emitted thick, black smoke, which may worsen the surrounding area's air quality over the short term. Feodosia lies 100 km (62 miles) east of Simferopol.
Avoid the area until authorities give the all-clear. Seek alternative routes and allow additional time for travel near the affected site. Follow all instructions from security personnel, including any evacuation orders. Consider remaining indoors to avoid smoke exposure, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness, such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
