Albania: Political activists to demonstrate at City Hall in Tirana Nov. 8

Political activists to stage protest at City Hall in Tirana, Albania, from 11:00 Nov. 8. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Political activists plan to protest at Tirana City Hall on Sheshi Skenderbej from 11:00 Nov. 8. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce alleged corruption over municipal contracts and demand the resignation of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj. Several hundred people will likely attend the protest based on previous campaign events. The majority of demonstrations passed off peacefully; however, activists occasionally hurled Molotov cocktails and clashed with police.

Authorities will likely deploy an increased security presence to the protest site to monitor the demonstration. Transport disruptions will likely affect the vicinity of Tirana City Hall amid the protest, especially if police close local roads. Clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement officers are possible.

Avoid the protest as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central Tirana, and consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the vicinity of the demonstration and any related disruptions. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
