Australia: Suburban and intercity rail service cancellations to cause major transport disruptions across Sydney through Nov. 24 /update 1

Significant transport disruptions likely amid rail strike across Sydney, Australia through Nov. 24. Consider alternative transport.

Warning

Significant train disruptions are set to affect millions of passengers across Sydney daily through the morning of Nov. 24 due to ongoing industrial action by the Rail, Tram, and Bus Union (RTBU). Unionized rail workers are participating in a labor stoppage over the government's decision not to implement 24-hour train services over the weekend. RBTU members have withdrawn previous strike plans and will continue to operate regular and special services according to schedule Nov. 21. However, reduced services and cancellations are affecting intercity trains via Newcastle, the Central Coast, the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands, and Illawarra through Nov. 24. Cancellations on all suburban and intercity train services also remain scheduled through till the morning of Nov. 24. Officials have announced increased frequency of Sydney Metro and Light Rail services Nov. 22-23 and replacement bus services, although the availability of alternative transport will be limited due to increased demand.

Increased congestion is likely on alternative modes of transport. High private vehicle use could lead to traffic congestion on main roads, particularly those heading toward Sydney's Central Business District (CBD). Associated demonstrations are also possible during the strike. Protest activity may materialize at transport hubs, government buildings, public squares, and on major thoroughfares.

Reconfirm road conditions and availability of public transport if operating in Sydney through Nov. 24. Seek alternative methods of transport for time-sensitive travel. Allow extra time to reach destinations due to increased traffic congestion and demand for alternative transportation. Avoid all demonstrations that may materialize as a precaution.
