Tight security, related disruptions likely in Siem Reap, Cambodia, Nov. 25-29 in connection with Anti-Personnel Mines Convention.

Informational

Increased security and related disruptions are likely in Siem Reap Nov. 25-29 as the city will host the 5th Review Meeting of the Convention on the Prohibition of Anti-Personnel Mines. The meeting will be accompanied by special events, including the 4-km (2-mile) "March for a Mine-Free World" on the morning of Nov. 24, starting from Angkor Wat temple and likely proceeding to the Terrace of the Elephants.

Reports indicate the march will attract around 3,000 participants. Its purpose is to raise awareness of the impact of anti-personnel mines and promote global efforts to eliminate them. Additional official events will likely occur in Siem Reap through Nov. 29 and could occur at various venues, including the Angkor Wat complex.

Although no immediate announcements exist for such gatherings, related demonstrations are possible over the coming days. Potential rally sites include prominent government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Participation will likely vary by location and sponsoring entity, although they are expected to remain on a small scale.

Increased security is likely in Siem Reap, especially around the Angkor Wat and Terrace of the Elephants areas. Authorities could implement enhanced measures, including road closures, checkpoints, and vehicle and pedestrian inspections. The presence of large groups of international and local participants may also increase the risk of street crime, particularly in crowded areas. Associated localized business and transport disruptions are likely.

Exercise caution if operating in or near Siem Reap through Nov. 29. As a precaution, avoid any demonstration that materializes. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for potential localized business and transport disruptions. Do not photograph the movement of security personnel and do not check out of accommodation without confirming onward travel. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
