Disruptions due to landslides ongoing near Dschang, West Region, Cameroon, as of Nov. 6. Fatalities reported; road closed.
Disruptions following landslides are ongoing near Dschang in West Region as of Nov. 6. An initial landslide occurred on the Dschang-Santchou road early Nov. 5 and whilst vehicles were waiting for the road to be cleared, another landslide occurred near the first and buried several passenger and construction vehicles. An unknown number of people were trapped under the debris and authorities have reported at least four fatalities and several others injured. Response operations are ongoing as of Nov. 6 and the casualty figures could rise in the coming hours and days. The Dschang-Santhcou road has been closed and traffic is being diverted to the Kekem Bafang-Bafoussam route. Related disruptions to road transport are likely in the area over the coming days.
Showers and isolated thunderstorms are forecast in the region over the coming days, which could result in flooding and additional landslides. Authorities could issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood- or landslide-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding or landslides impact utility networks.
Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters.
Localized business disruptions may occur in the affected area; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of damage to facilities, possible evacuations, and some employees' inability to reach work sites.
Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions in the vicinity of the incident. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
