Chile: Unionized workers plan to strike and protest nationwide on Nov. 28
Unions call for nationwide strike and protests in Chile on Nov. 28. Demonstration along the Alameda in Santiago from 11:00.
State workers linked with the National Association of Fiscal Employees (La Agrupacion Nacional de Empleados Fiscales, ANEF) and the Unitary Central of Workers (Central Unitaria de Trabajadores, CUT) plan to strike and protest nationwide on Nov. 28. The action is in response to various demands, including salary adjustments and reduced working hours. In Santiago, striking workers will march from 11:00 along Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins, widely known as Alameda, between Avenida Santa Rosa and Plaza Los Heroes. Officials are reportedly planning traffic detours to facilitate the march. Gatherings are likely in other major urban centers along road routes and near plazas and government buildings. Thousands of people are likely to participate in the action.
Disruptions to some state operations are likely throughout the day. Security forces will likely deploy to monitor all related gatherings, particularly the primary event in Santiago. Disruptions to traffic flow are likely near all events. The threat of violence is low but can not be discounted if demonstrators ignore police orders or engage in acts of public violence.
As a standard precaution, avoid all protests. Do not cross protest roadblocks. Heed official instructions. Reconfirm road routes before departure.
