India: Authorities to implement increased security in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh State, Nov. 14-Jan. 12
Tight security, public gathering bans in effect in Lucknow, India, Nov. 14-Jan. 12 in connection with upcoming protests and public holidays.
Officials plan to increase security across the city of Lucknow Nov. 14-Jan. 12 in response to several civil unrest incidents and public holidays, as well as to facilitate civil service examinations. The government will impose Section 163 (formerly Section 144) of the Indian Civil Security Code. Under Section 163, unauthorized public demonstrations are prohibited, as is the use of drones, tractors, horse carts, fire equipment, and flammable or lethal substances.
Organizing public events without a permit, carrying sharp weapons or firearms, spreading rumors or false information, and burning symbolic figures in open places will be prohibited under the directive. Landlords and employers must provide police verification for tenants and employees in Lucknow. Violations are punishable under Section 223 of the Indian Judicial Code and other relevant provisions.
Security personnel will likely deploy to various parts of Lucknow as a precaution. Depending on the severity of the perceived threat, authorities could order the use of additional measures, such as checkpoints, curfews, and restrictions on media and telecommunications. Security measures may prompt localized transport or business disruptions. Clashes are possible if activist groups attempt to demonstrate in defiance of the Section 163 declaration.
Exercise increased caution if operating in or near Lucknow through Jan. 12. Keep away from locations where security personnel appear to be deploying. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
