Further students' protests likely in parts of Uttar Pradesh State, India, through late November due to revised civil service exam schedule.
Additional students' protests are likely in parts of Uttar Pradesh State through at least late November to denounce the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission's (UPPSC) decision to revise the scheduling and conduct of civil service exams. In recent days, thousands of activists have staged related demonstrations at various locations, such as the UPPSC offices in Prayagraj and the Aliganj area of Lucknow. Some reports indicate officials have purportedly resorted to baton charges to disperse crowds in Prayagraj.
Additional gatherings of various types are highly likely in the coming days and could spread to other parts of the state. Potential rally sites include UPPSC offices as well as other prominent government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares. Well-attended events will probably continue attracting thousands of participants, particularly in Lucknow. These gatherings may occur despite the ongoing public gathering restrictions under Section 163 of the Indian Penal Code, which are in effect until Jan. 12, 2025, for cultural and religious holidays.
Authorities will likely deploy security personnel to monitor such rallies and may attempt to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Depending on operational needs, officials may enact additional security restrictions in Lucknow and other urban centers. Further clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Disruptions to local businesses and transport services are likely.
As a precaution, avoid any demonstration that materializes. Keep away from locations where security personnel appear to be deploying, and leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for potential localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
