Italy: Rival groups plan protests in Bologna, Nov. 9

Rival groups of activists plan protests in Bologna, Italy, Nov. 9. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Rival groups plan to protest in central Bologna on Nov. 9. Groups affiliated with the Patriots' Network and Casapound, which are known for nationalist policies, will gather from 14:00 in Via Gramsci and march to Piazza XX Settembre. Protestors will denounce drug dealing and violence in the city. Labor unions, anti-far-right groups, and Democratic Party politicians are staging a counter-protest in the Piazza del Nettuno as of the morning of Nov. 9. Several hundred to low thousands of participants may take part in each event.

Authorities are highly likely to deploy additional police to monitor the gatherings. Additional security measures and likely road closures will likely prompt localized transport and business disruptions near the demonstrations. Confrontations and scuffles are possible between protestors and police, and between protesters and rival activists.

Avoid the protests as a standard precaution. Plan for delays and consider alternative routes if operating close to the protest sites on Nov. 9. Heed instruction from local authorities. Leave the area immediately at the first signs of confrontation.
