Italy: Unionized railway workers to stage nationwide eight-hour strike Nov. 5

Railway workers in Italy to stage nationwide eight-hour strike 09:00-17:00 Nov. 5. Reconfirm train travel arrangements.

Warning

Railway workers represented by several of Italy's major labor unions plan to stage a nationwide eight-hour strike between the hours of 09:00-17:00 Nov. 5. The purpose of the action is to protest alleged increasing insecurity on board trains; the work stoppage is in reaction to a recent stabbing of a train conductor at a station in Rivarolo.

The walkout will probably prompt significant rail service disruptions beginning in the hours immediately ahead of the strike and extending for several hours after the workers return to duty. Nevertheless, a minimum level of service will be guaranteed 06:00-09:00 and 18:00-21:00 on the day of the strike per Italian law.

Reconfirm rail travel arrangements for Nov. 5. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider alternative modes of travel for critical trips.
