Netherlands: Protests possible in Amsterdam as of Nov. 12 despite ban on demonstrations /update 3
Unauthorized protests possible in Amsterdam, Netherlands, as of Nov. 12 despite ban until 07:00 Nov. 14. Increased security likely.
Protests remain possible in Amsterdam over the coming days despite authorities' maintaining a temporary demonstration ban until at least 07:00 Nov. 14. Police have advised the public that further violent unrest was likely during the evening of Nov. 12, particularly in the Amsterdam Nieuw-West area. Unauthorized protests and incidents of arson occurred in that area on the evening of Nov. 11; at least three arrests were made. On Nov. 10, a demonstration by hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists in Dam Square ended with the arrests of around 50 persons.
Increased security is likely throughout Amsterdam, particularly in central squares, near government buildings, and in areas previously impacted by unrest. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are probable. Further violence and arrests remain possible. Additional incidents of vandalism cannot be ruled out.
Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Avoid any demonstrations that may materialize. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
Authorities are maintaining emergency measures and increased security throughout Amsterdam following clashes that took place during the night of Nov. 7-8 between pro-Palestinian activists and fans of the Israeli Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer team in several parts of the city, including near the Johan Cruijff Arena and Dam Square. The measures include bans on demonstrations and face coverings; police have also been granted expanded search powers. The directives are in force both within Amsterdam itself and the suburb of Amstelveen on the city's south side.
