Poland: Groups to stage Independence Day marches in Warsaw, Nov. 11
Groups to stage Independence Day marches in Warsaw and other centers across Poland, Nov. 11; heightened security, disruptions likely.
Groups plan to stage Independence Day marches in Warsaw and other centers across Poland on Nov. 11. Leaders of the Independence March association predict that tens of thousands will take part in the largest event in Warsaw. In October, local officials first banned the march, citing increasing violent and racist incidents in recent years, and then allowed it to take place. The march is likely to follow the traditional route of Dmowski Roundabout to Jerozolimskie Avenue, Poniatowski Bridge, Wal Miedzeszynski Street, and the National Stadium. Anti-far-right protestors may stage counter-protests along the march route. Additional Independence Day marches are likely in other centers across Poland.
Unionized police in Warsaw have also threatened industrial action on Nov. 11 to demand improved pay and conditions. It is possible that police officers will withhold flexible working practices to reduce their output and efficiency. The industrial action may reduce the availability of policing for the march.
Local officials will likely deploy significant security measures along the march route. Road closures and congestion will likely prompt significant travel and transport disruptions. Scuffles and low-level violence are possible.
Avoid the protests and march as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in the affected area. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
