South Africa: Political party plan protest march through Pretoria, Nov. 1
Activists gathering for protest march through central Pretoria (Tshwane), South Africa, Nov. 1; likely localized disruptions.
Supporters of the South African Communist Party (SACP) are gathering for a protest through central Pretoria (Tshwane), Nov. 1. Authorties have indicated that the march was set to start from 09:00 near the Marabastad bus depot and will end near the National Treasury. The protest motive is the high cost of living, amongst other issues.
Several hundred participants are likely to join the protest. Localized increased security is likely, leading to road blockages and localized transport disruptions. While unlikely, clashes between police and protesters are possible if demonstrators ignore official orders to disperse or engage in acts of public violence.
Avoid the protest area. Plan accordingly for increased security along the protest route, as well as for transport and service delivery disruptions. Allow extra time to reach destinations, and seek alternative of transport if necessary. Reconfirm the status of road routes before departure. Reconfirm administrative appointments.
