Spain: Unionized teachers to strike, demonstrate in Madrid Nov. 21
Unionized teachers plan to strike, demonstrate, and march in central Madrid, Spain, Nov. 21. Business, transport disruptions likely.
Unionized teachers affiliated with several unions plan to strike and protest in Madrid on Nov. 21. The purpose of the labor action is to demand improved working conditions, and follows related demonstrations on Oct. 16 and Nov. 14, as well as a strike and protest on Oct. 29. Demonstrators plan to hold two demonstrations on Nov. 21 which are likely to draw at least several hundred to more than a thousand participants each:
12:00: Protest at Plaza de las Penuelas.
17:30: March from the Plaza de Atocha (also known as Plaza del Emperador Carlos V) via the Fountain of Neptune to the Puerta del Sol.
The strike may disrupt businesses by prompting increased employee absenteeism. Police will likely deploy near all demonstration sites and the march route areas to facilitate the demonstration; related transport disruptions are likely. Low-level confrontations between demonstators and law enforcement officers, frustrated motorists, or other opposed individuals cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the demonstrations as a standard precaution. Plan accordingly for increased absenteeism among employees who are parents or guardians of school-aged children on Nov. 21; consider a liberal telecommuting policy for the duration of the strike. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
