Venezuela: Opposition calls for nationwide protests on Dec. 1; major gathering planned in Caracas

Opposition plans nationwide rallies in Venezuela on Dec. 1. Ruling party events also planned nationwide. Several gathering sites in Caracas.

Warning

Opposition supporters plan to protest nationwide on Dec. 1 to reject the outcome of the July 28 presidential election. The primary gathering point will be at 16:00 at Plaza La Castellana in Caracas. Hundreds of people are likely to attend the gathering. The ruling Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV) has reportedly called for 'cultural demonstrations' in major cities across the country on Dec. 1 to commemorate Christmas. Pro-government events are scheduled in Petare, Miraflores Palace, and 23 de Enero in Caracas. Thousands of people are likely to attend related events.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor related gatherings, particularly the opposition event in Caracas and any events that transpire elsewhere. Opposition protesters could march along major road routes and gather near prominent squares, government buildings, and party offices in urban centers nationwide. Counter-protests by PSUV supporters are possible at all events. The potential for violence is high, particularly at opposition-led events and if opposing groups march or gather in proximity. Disruptions to overland travel are likely near all protest areas.

Avoid all large public gatherings as a precauation. Reconfirm the status of road routes before departure, particularly in Caracas. Should violence occur leave the area immediately. Do not cross protester roadblocks.
