Argentina: Unionized public sector workers plan to protest nationwide Dec. 11

Unionized public workers plan to protest in urban centers across Argentina on Dec. 11. Heightened security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized public sector workers affiliated with the Association of State Workers (Asociacion de Trabajadores del Estado, ATE) plan to demonstrate in urban centers nationwide on Dec. 11. The action is to demand automatic contract renewal for 50,000 public sector workers whose contracts are set to expire Dec. 31. Organizers have not disclosed exact start times or gathering points; however, the largest gathering will likely take place in Buenos Aires. During the protests, reduced government services are probable.

Large demonstrations, with up to thousands of participants, are likely in cities throughout Argentina. Demonstrations are particularly likely near government buildings and public squares. A heightened security presence and localized transit and business disruptions are likely near demonstrations. Clashes cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protests as a standard precaution. Plan for delays and alternative routes if operating in Argentina's major cities on Dec. 11 or traveling by road within the country. Do not attempt to cross a roadblock if you encounter one. Heed instructions from authorities.
