Australia: Unionized Qantas Airways engineers to strike at major airports nationwide Dec. 20

Unionized Qantas engineers plan to strike at major airports across Australia Dec. 20. Flight disruptions possible.

Informational

Members of the Qantas Engineers' Alliance (QEA) are planning to strike in multiple cities across Australia Dec. 20 over a wage dispute. The work stoppage could affect Qantas (QF) flights at Adelaide Airport (ADL), Brisbane Airport (BNE), Hobart Airport (HBA), Melbourne Airport (MEL), Perth Airport (PER), and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD). Qantas officials assert that the industrial action will not lead to flight disruptions; nevertheless, delays and cancellations cannot be ruled out. Although organizers have not announced protest plans, participating workers could stage rallies at affected airports; dozens of activists could join each gathering.

Officials may deploy additional security to any demonstrations that may materialize. Violence is not likely. Lingering disruptions are possible after any flight cancellation due to increased passenger traffic.

Reconfirm flight reservations if booked to travel on Qantas Dec. 20. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Heed all official transport and security advisories. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution.

This strike follows a work stoppage conducted by the QEA 03:30 Dec. 13-07:30 Dec. 14 over the same wage dispute. Minimal flight disruptions were reported. The QEA may plan further strikes after Dec. 20 if the wage dispute remains unresolved.
