Bangladesh, India: Bilateral diplomatic tensions, cross-border security measures likely to persist through at least mid-December

Consular service disruptions, tight border security likely between Bangladesh and India through mid-December following recent tensions.

Warning

Diplomatic tensions and related disruptions will likely persist between Bangladesh and India through at least mid-December. In recent weeks, a bilateral dispute has erupted over the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das and growing concerns about discrimination against minorities in Bangladesh. Related civil unrest incidents have occurred in both countries.

On Dec. 3, the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, Tripura State, suspended its consular services indefinitely. The decision followed an incident the previous day when a group of individuals stormed the mission, damaging property and removing the Bangladeshi national flag. Seven people were arrested, and three police officers were suspended in connection with the incident.

Indian authorities have also heightened security around the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, prohibiting public gatherings near the mission until further notice. If tensions continue to rise, further disruptions to consular services could occur at diplomatic facilities on both sides.

In addition, the Indian government has deployed enhanced security measures along the Bangladesh border in eight districts of West Bengal State. Depending on the evolving situation, both countries may impose further measures along the border. Further isolated security incidents, including vandalism, cannot be ruled out.

Confirm all transport arrangements before departure if traveling between Bangladesh and India. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. Prepare for possible delays in accessing consular services at related diplomatic missions. Avoid all demonstrations.
