France: Unionized drivers to conduct demonstrations nationwide Dec. 3 /update 2

Unionized taxi drivers to protest in Paris and other centers across France from Dec. 3. Transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized vehicule de tourisme avec chauffeur (VTC) and taxi drivers plan to demonstrate, set roadblocks and execute go-slow processions nationwide on Dec. 3. Organizers will denounce changes to payments for the carriage of medical case passengers. In Paris, local media predict around 500 vehicles will demonstrate at the Assemblee Nationale. Other major protests are likely in Bordeaux, Lyon, and other major centers, where convoys of taxis will likely converge at airports, rail stations, and government buildings. The strike and protests may continue in the coming days.

In Bordeaux, participants plan to proceed from Bordeaux-Merignac Airport (BOD) to Bordeaux-Saint-Jean train station to protest from 15:00 to 19:00. A related demonstration on Nov. 26 drew 200-250 participants. A similar number is likely Dec 3.

In Lyon, drivers will continue the protest activity that started Dec. 2, on Dec. 3. In addition to go-slow protests, organizers plan roadblocks on key autoroutes and at junctions around the city. The strike and protests may continue in the coming days.

The availability of private hire vehicles will likely be significantly reduced throughout the strike period. Authorities will likely deploy additional police to roadblocks and go-slow convoys, to mitigate travel disruptions. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators, law enforcement officers, or frustrated travelers cannot be ruled out.

Reconfirm private hire bookings across France. Exercise caution and allow additional travel time; seek other means of transport if necessary. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
