Increased security is expected in Berlin's Charlottenburg district as of the late afternoon on Dec. 31 following a reported knife attack that injured several people. Reports indicate that the attack initially occurred at a supermarket near the intersection of Sommringtasse and Quedlinburger Strasse. Authorities confirm a suspect has been detained, and at least two victims have been hospitalized. The motive is unclear. Additional security measures, including checkpoints and increased foot patrols, are likely due to New Year celebrations.

Disruptions and heightened security will likely continue in Berlin through Jan. 1 as a precaution. Demonstrations denouncing the stabbing attack can't be ruled out.

Avoid the area until police give the all-clear; strictly heed the instructions of local authorities. Allow extra time to reach destinations in Charlottenburg into at least the morning hours of Jan. 1. Remain courteous and cooperative if stopped and questioned by law enforcement personnel.
