Lawyers likely to continue sporadic strikes and related protests in Ghaziabad, India, through at least early December. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized lawyers will likely continue their ongoing series of sporadic work stoppages and related demonstrations in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh State, through at least early December. The purpose of the action is to demand that various grievances be addressed, including the transfer of the district judge. In recent weeks, legal practitioners have staged intermittent work stoppages and held associated protests. As of Dec. 2, demonstration organizers have threatened to continue their protest activities until their demands are met.

Additional protests, including labor strikes and transport blockages, are likely across Ghaziabad. Protest organizers may escalate the campaign to other areas, including the National Capital Region, if their demands are unmet. Potential gathering sites include government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares. Authorities are likely to deploy security personnel to monitor such rallies and may attempt to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out; activists claim law enforcement personnel used baton charges during a protest near court premises on Oct. 29. Disruptions to local businesses, as well as legal and transport services, are likely.

If operating in Ghaziabad, avoid all protests as a standard security precaution. Keep away from locations where security personnel appear to be deploying and leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for potential localized business and transport disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
