Indonesia: Workers' rally planned at Gedung Sate, Bandung City, West Java Province, Dec. 16-18

Workers to protest in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, Dec. 16-18. Tight security, transport disruptions certain; scuffles possible.

Warning

The Confederation of All Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPSI) has called for a protest at the Gedung Sate landmark in Bandung City, West Java, Dec. 16-18. Organizers are pressurizing the provincial government to refrain from intervening in local administrations' determination of minimum wage hikes. Union leaders claim a few thousand activists will participate.

Authorities are likely to increase security deployment to monitor the gathering. Imposition of traffic restrictions such as security cordons, diversions, and road closures are probable if there is a large turnout. Minor scuffles are possible, mainly if demonstrators try to bypass security barriers. Attendees may march to the West Java Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) building along Jalan Diponegoro from the main protest site. Traffic disruptions are likely near rally venues, especially if activists block roads such as Jalan Diponegoro.

Avoid the demonstration as a precaution. In the event of clashes, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernment building. Allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations; do not navigate roadblocks. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
