Japan: Increased volcanic activity ongoing at Sakurajima Volcano in Kagoshima Prefecture as of Dec. 23

Officials with the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) have observed increased levels of volcanic activity at the Sakurajima Volcano in Kagoshima Prefecture as of Dec. 23. Explosive eruptive activity occurred at the Minamidake summit crater from around 07:10 and 07:29 Dec. 23, which produced an ash cloud rising to around 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) above the crater. Volcanic ash is spreading mainly over the Osumi region. Officials advise caution in areas around Sakurajima and Tarumizu City due to the possibility of a slightly larger amount of ashfall. Small volcanic rocks may be carried by the wind and fall within an area of ​​about 7 km (4 miles) southeast of the crater. The JMA has forecast light ashfall gradually spreading southeastward across southeastern Kagoshima Prefecture. Authorities in Kagoshima City have restricted access to the mountain around the crater and advised residents to be cautious.

Authorities maintain alert level 3 (out of 5) for Sakurajima Volcano. Despite the increased volcanic activity, authorities have not issued any mandatory evacuations for the surrounding area. People are advised to avoid the areas around the crater due to the risk of pyroclastic flows and other volcanic debris. Additional eruptions could cause low-level seismic activity, ash clouds, and landslides in the surrounding area.

Plan for possible transport disruptions in the surrounding area, especially if a significant eruptive activity continues. Road conditions could quickly deteriorate during periods of substantial ashfall, and visibility could be reduced. Officials might close roads near the volcano depending on the presence of hazardous volcanic material. Fine particulate matter ejected from the volcano could pose a hazard to flights in the surrounding airspace. Authorities might temporarily close airport facilities if significant ashfall accumulations occur.
