Nigeria: Labor unions launch indefinite strike in multiple states from Dec. 1 /update 1
Nigeria Labour Congress start indefinite strike in Federal Capital Territory and other states in Nigeria Dec. 1. Protests possible.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) launched an indefinite strike in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), including Abuja, and several other states from Dec. 1 demanding the implementation of a new minimum wage. Other affected states include Abia, Cross River, Ebonyi, Enugu, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Yobe, and Zamfara. Some states withdrew from the strike, including Akwa Ibom, Ekiti, Imo, Katsina, Oyo, and Sokoto. The strike was initially planned to start Dec. 2. The action may be called off if officials answer the demand.
Disruptions to various sectors (air, road, and maritime transport, utilities, government services, business operations, and healthcare services, among others) are likely. Associated disruptions may have knock-on effects on other states not participating in the strike. Related protests are possible as long as the strike continues. Likely protest locations include government buildings in main urban centers, main roads, and transport hubs, including airports. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive, block traffic, or ignore police orders to disperse.
Confirm all business appointments and travel arrangements, including flights, from Dec. 1. Allow extra time for travel near protest sites. Avoid any demonstrations that materialize; if crowds form or violence occurs nearby, leave the area immediately. Do attempt to cross a roadblock. Heed instructions from security services.
