Pakistan: Authorities responding to structure fire in Karachi early Dec. 31

Officials responding to large structure fire near Kamran Chowrangi, Karachi, early Dec. 31. Avoid area.

Warning

Authorities are responding to a large fire at a furniture market in the Kamran Chowrangi area of the Gulistan-e-Johar neighborhood of Karachi as of early Dec. 31. There are no immediate reports of casualties. Officials may restrict traffic in surrounding areas. The cause of the blaze is unclear. The fire is approximately 1.9 km (1.2 miles) from Jinnah International Airport (KHI); however, there have been no reports of disruptions to flight operations at KHI.

Heightened security will likely continue in the affected area over the coming hours. Localized transport and business disruptions are probable. Smoke from the fire may worsen the surrounding area's air quality, and the presence of smoke may disrupt air travel at KHI.

Avoid the affected area until authorities give the all-clear. Seek alternative routes and allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations. Follow all instructions from security personnel, including any evacuation orders. Consider remaining indoors to avoid smoke exposure, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness such as asthma or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water. Allow additional time for air travel via KHI.
