Philippines: Missing Taiwanese national confirmed dead in Santa Rosa, Laguna Province
Authorities confirm death of missing Taiwanese national in Santa Rosa, Laguna Province, Philippines.
Reports on Dec. 17 indicate that a Taiwanese national, missing for over two months, was shot and killed by unknown suspect(s); officials state that his remains were found in a forest in Santa Rosa, Laguna Province. The businessman had lived in Paranaque, Manila, and was reported missing by his employee Oct. 10 after he failed to return from a trip to Tagaytay, Cavite Province. Officials have not announced any arrests or the motive behind the incident. However, Taiwanese media reports indicate that his credit cards were stolen and bank deposits withdrawn.
Santa Rosa is approximately 10 km (6.2 miles) northwest of Calamba City, 24 km (14.9 miles) northeast of Tagaytay, and 30 km (18.6 miles) southeast of Manila.
Following the confirmation of the Taiwanese national's death, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines issued an advisory Dec. 18 for rising crimes such as robbery, fraud, and theft during the Christmas season. Although petty theft, such as pick-pocketing and snatch-and-grab thefts, is the principal threat to foreigners in the Philippines, travelers and expatriates can also fall victim to incidents of robbery in both urban and rural areas. Criminal elements are typically armed and could resort to violence if met with resistance.
