Philippines: Officials increase warning level at Kanlaon volcano, Negros Occidental, Dec. 9
Authorities increase warning level at Kanlaon volcano, Negros Occidental Province, Philippines, Dec. 9. Evacuation zone in place.
Officials have raised the warning for Kanlaon volcano, Negros Occidental Province, from Alert Level 2 to Level 3 as of 15:03 Dec. 9 following an eruption. The volcano produced an ash plume 3 km (2 miles) high that drifted west-southwest. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOLCS) has warned of further volcanic activity in the coming hours.
Authorities created a 6 km (4 miles) evacuation zone around the crater and warned that additional evacuations are possible. Entry to the volcano is also restricted. Further eruptions could cause localized transport disruptions; if an eruption creates a significant ash plume, flight delays could occur at Bacolod–Silay International Airport (BCD). Ground transport disruptions could also occur. Falling ash could cause slick driving conditions on nearby roads and reduced visibility, leading to localized traffic disruptions.
Heed the advice of local authorities and obey restrictions around the volcano. If larger eruptions occur, confirm flight schedules, especially at BCD. Drive cautiously, as roads may be slippery from volcanic ash. If operating in areas affected by an ash cloud, consider remaining indoors when possible. Individuals who must be outdoors should use face masks and observe other precautions to avoid ash inhalation. Volcanic ash and gases can cause eye irritation and respiratory problems. Do not rub irritated eyes; flush them with water. Seek medical attention if you have trouble breathing.
