Philippines: Power outage ongoing in Siargao and Bucas Grande, Surigao del Norte Province, as of Dec. 9
Electricity disruptions affecting Siargao and Bucas Grande, Philippines, as of Dec. 9. Telecommunication, water disruptions likely.
Unplanned electricity disruptions continue to affect over 36,000 houses and businesses in Siargao and Bucas Grande islands, Surigao del Norte Province, as of Dec. 9. Utility provider Siargao Electric Cooperative (SIARELCO) indicated that the power outages, which began Dec. 1, were caused by a line fault in the submarine cable connecting Siargao and Bucas Grande islands to mainland Mindanao. SIARELCO is providing charging stations 08:00-18:00 daily at several locations across Siargao Island. Authorities expect to deploy additional generator sets Dec. 12 to provide electricity on a rotational basis. Officials plan to conduct repairs but did not specify a timeline for the full restoration of power.
Disruptions to telecommunications, including cellular and mobile services, may occur. Power outages could result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as ATMs and gas stations. The power disruptions are also affecting water pumps. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.
Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by power outages. Confirm accommodation reservations. Verify that security systems are operational, including after power is restored. Ensure that generators are functional and fully fueled. Minimize nonessential water use throughout the outage. Use only bottled water from reputable suppliers for drinking and hygienic purposes.
