Puerto Rico: Power outages islandwide Dec. 31 /update 1
Power outages escalate across Puerto Rico Dec. 31. Unclear when service will resume.
Power outages are continuing across Puerto Rico as of 08:00 Dec. 31. Over one million customers, representing over 80 percent of the customer base, are now reportedly without power. Officials have not yet indicated when power will be restored. The failure of a transmission and distribution facility on the southern coast earlier on Dec. 31 caused an islandwide chain reaction and outage in multiple areas.
Disruptions to business and telecommunications, including mobile SMS, voice, and internet services, are likely in areas experiencing blackouts. Transport disruptions will probably affect areas with malfunctioning traffic signals. The power disruptions could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as ATMs and gas stations. Additionally, blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.
Charge mobile and communication devices when possible and ensure backup batteries are available. Plan for road travel delays due to possible malfunctioning or nonfunctional traffic lights in affected areas. Exercise caution when driving in recently impacted areas. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working. Park vehicles in secure areas, and complete ground movements before nightfall. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel devices where necessary. Reconfirm all transport arrangements.
