Emergency crews are responding to a gas explosion and fire at the Alania Mall in Vladikavkaz the morning of Dec. 25. Initial reports indicate at least one death and nine other injuries, mainly staff and pedestrians. The mall was reportedly closed when the incident occurred and there were no visitors in the building. The resulting blaze has spread to at least 800 sqm (8,600 sqft).

Heightened security and localized business and transport disruptions are likely in the coming hours as emergency response continues.
