Spain: Adverse weather forecast across northern regions through at least early Dec. 9 /update 1
Severe weather forecast across parts of northern Spain through early Dec. 9. Possible transport, business, and utility disruptions.
Adverse weather is forecast across parts of northern Spain through at least early Dec. 9. Officials have issued red snow warnings for several areas, including locations between Oviedo and Leon in the northwest and Pamplona and Andorra near the Spain-France border. Authorities have warned of potentially extreme or catastrophic damage to people and properties and recommend that only essential travel be undertaken. The warning follows a State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) special weather bulletin earlier in the week advising that a storm system would impact Spain and the Balearic Islands through Dec. 10. As of Dec. 8, several yellow and orange warnings remain active across much of these territories. Further information is available here. Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.
Wind gusts could cause blowing and drifting snow, and decreased visibility is likely in mountainous areas. Avalanches are possible in mountainous areas where the snowpack has become unstable due to heavy snowfall. Power outages could occur throughout the affected areas. Mountain passes and tunnels could be closed as a precautionary measure during periods of intense snowfall.
The disruptive weather will likely cause some delays and cancellations at airports in affected regions. Snow could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are possible. Disruptions triggered by inclement weather and resultant hazards could persist well after conditions have improved. If there is severe damage to infrastructure, repair or reconstruction efforts may result in residual disruptions.
Monitor local media for weather-related updates and advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business arrangements before traveling in the affected areas. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast; plan for possible supply chain disruptions throughout the affected areas. Exercise caution in elevated terrain due to the avalanche threat.
