Spain: Campaigners plan mass rally in central Valencia Dec. 29
Campaign groups plan mass rally in central Valencia, Spain, from 18:00 Dec. 29. Heightened security, disruptions likely.
Campaign groups plan to stage a mass rally in central Valencia from 18:00 Dec. 29. Numerous local organizations will denounce the local government's emergency response to the flooding that occurred on Oct. 29, and which led to the deaths of over 200 people. Protesters will also demand the resignation of the Valencia Region President, Carlos Mazon. Participants will gather in Plaza del Ayuntamiento and march to Plaza de la Virgen. Two previous events in November attracted between 100,000 and 130,000 participants; similar numbers are likely to take part Dec. 29.
Authorities are likely to deploy law enforcement officers in significant numbers to monitor the event. Heightened security, road closures, and congestion will likely prompt road travel and transport disruptions in Valencia on Dec. 29. The event will likely pass off peacefully.
Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Check local traffic conditions and public transport schedules for disruptions before beginning journeys. Allow extra time for travel and plan alternative routes if necessary. Heed instructions from authorities. Immediately leave the area at the first signs of confrontation.
