Spain: Unionized public transport workers plan strike in Valencia region from Jan. 4

Unionized public transport workers plan indefinite strike in the Valencia region of Spain, from Jan. 4. Rail and tram disruptions likely.

Informational

Public transport workers associated with the Alternativa Sindical union plan to strike indefinitely in the Valencia region from Jan. 4. The strike will affect security guards on services provided by FGV (Valencia Regional Railways), the rail and tram network operator. Unionized workers are in dispute with a security contractor over service level agreements. It is not known what proportion of services will be affected or for how long the dispute will continue.

Unless averted, the strike will likely disrupt bus and tram services across the Valencia region. It may also prompt increased traffic congestion and demand for alternative public transportation. Services that do operate are likely to be more congested than usual. Lingering disruptions may occur after the strike ends. Demonstrations are possible outside transport depots. Additional police will likely be deployed to monitor all protests; related security measures may lead to localized transport disruptions.

Confirm all travel arrangements and status of public transport services in the Valencia region from Jan. 4. Allow extra time for travel. Plan for congestion on roads and other secondary modes of transport. Follow local travel advice. Avoid any protests that may materialize. Heed instructions from authorities.
