Spain: Unionized rail workers to protest in several cities Dec. 19
Rail workers to protest at train stations in Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Seville, and Valencia, Spain, Dec. 19; heightened security likely.
Rail workers affiliated with the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) union plan to protest at major train stations in several cities on Dec. 19. The purpose of the demonstrations is to demand higher salaries. It was not immediately clear how many people would participate in the protests. Demonstrations are planned at the following sites and times:
Barcelona: Sants Station, 10:00-11:30.
Madrid: Madrid-Puerta de Atocha Station, 10:00-11:30.
Valencia: Valencia Station North, 11:00-12:00.
Additionally, related demonstrations are scheduled to take place 10:00-11:30 in Malaga and Seville. While not explicitly stated by protest organizers, rail workers will likely stage these demonstrations at Malaga Maria Zambrano Station and Seville Santa Justa Station, respectively.
Law enforcement officers will likely deploy nearby to facilitate all demonstrations. The presence of protesters and law enforcement officers will likely disrupt movement within the affected stations and may cause some rail service disruptions. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers, frustrated travelers, or opposed individuals cannot be ruled out.
Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling via any of the affected stations. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
