A magnitude-5.8 Earthquake occurred in western Nevada at around 16:08 Dec. 9. The epicenter was about 24 km (15 miles) north-northeast of Yerington and 64 km (40 miles) south-southeast of Carson City. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 0 km (0 miles), and moderate-to-strong shaking was reported in parts of Nevada near the epicenter, as well as light-to-moderate shaking in nearby areas of the rest of western and central Nevada and northern and central California. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake. Damage is probable. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light to moderate aftershocks are likely over the coming days. The earthquake is likely an aftershock of the magnitude-5.8 earthquake that occurred at around 15:08 Dec. 9.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
