Bangladesh: Ongoing gas supply shortages likely to continue in Dhaka through at least late January

Ongoing gas supply shortages likely to continue in Dhaka, Bangladesh, through at least late January. Commercial disruptions possible.

Informational

Ongoing gas supply shortages will likely persist in Dhaka through at least late January due to ongoing repairs at a Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) terminal owned by Titas Gas and weather-related damage to pipelines. In recent weeks, residents in neighborhoods such as Azimpur, Banasree, Bashabo, Dhanmondi, Mirpur, and Mohammadpur have been experiencing supply disruptions, with some areas lacking gas for most of the day. The gas shortages are also reportedly affecting factory operations in industrial areas like Gazipur and Narayanganj.

Associated transport, commercial, and power disruptions are possible in areas affected by gas supply shortages. Protests by business owners, workers, and residents affected by gas outages are possible, mainly outside government offices, industrial areas, utility company offices, and at major intersections. Police are likely to disperse large or disruptive gatherings.

Plan for commercial disruptions and delivery delays; seek alternative gas supplies for operations. Exercise caution around any protest site; heed all traffic and security advisories. If violence breaks out nearby, leave immediately for a secure, non-governmental building.
