Canada: Education workers launch indefinite strike in Edmonton and Sturgeon on Jan. 13 to demand increase in wages
Unionized education workers launch indefinite strike in Edmonton and Sturgeon, Alberta, Canada, Jan. 13.
Unionized education workers represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) have launched an indefinite strike affecting public schools in Edmonton and Sturgeon, Alberta, on Jan. 13. The purpose of the action is to demand better funding, including increased wages. Striking workers include assistants, librarians, and administrative staff. While classes at the affected schools will likely continue, authorities anticipate disruptions to normal activities. Additionally, CUPE members plan to rally outside many of the schools in the districts, including Ross Sheppard High School and M.E. LaZerte High School, for the duration of the work stoppage.
Heightened security and transport disruptions are possible near the impacted schools. Classes could be canceled in some schools if the strike becomes protracted.
Avoid all protests as a precaution and allow additional time to reach destinations near public schools in Edmonton and Sturgeon through at least mid-January. Plan accordingly for increased absenteeism among employees who are parents or guardians of school-aged children.
