France: Unionized port workers plan to stage 4-hour strikes nationwide intermittently Jan. 7-31
Unionized port workers plan to hold intermittent 4-hour industrial actions at ports across France Jan. 7-31. Shipping disruptions likely.
Port workers associated with the National Federation of Ports and Docks (Federation Nationale des Ports et Docks, FNPD) chapter of the General Confederation of Labour (Confederation Generale du Travail, CGT) union plan to stage a series of 4-hour strikes through late January. The action is due to an ongoing dispute over pension reform negotiations. The FNPD union plans the 4-hour work stoppages between 10:00 and 16:00 on Jan. 7, 9, 13, 15, 17, 21, 23, 27, 29, and 31. In addition, the union has imposed a ban on overtime working through January.
It is not known whether the industrial action will affect all ports across France. The impact of each event in each port is not immediately apparent; however, the cumulative effect of industrial action through January will likely result in some port services and maritime transportation disruptions. Ports in French overseas territories may also be affected. Striking workers may form pickets at port facilities. Previous strikes planned for Dec. 9-10 were suspended.
Unless averted, port and maritime disruptions are likely through late January. Heightened security is likely at affected ports and near any related protest area. Localized transport and road travel disruptions are likely in the vicinity of demonstration sites. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Confirm deliveries and plan for potential shipping delays during the work stoppage. Consider alternative shipping methods for time-sensitive cargo. As a standard precaution, avoid any related demonstrations.
